You stopped initiating. You told yourself it was the mature move, that you were taking the pressure off, giving her room to breathe. Weeks passed. Maybe longer. And the distance did not close. It widened. Now you are sitting with a want you have buried so many times it has started to feel like resentment.
The Problem Was Never the Initiating
Most men land on the same solution when intimacy dries up. Stop reaching. Stop wanting out loud. They reason that their desire is the source of the friction, so they quarantine it.
But the want does not disappear. It just has nowhere to go. You end up holding pressure that used to move through the relationship, and now it sits in your chest and curdles.
Stopping pursuit does not fix the problem. It creates a second one alongside it. You traded visible pressure for invisible pressure, and the invisible kind is harder on a marriage.
What You Are Actually Asking Sex to Do
Here is the question worth sitting with. What are you asking intimacy to carry?
If her yes means you are wanted, and her no means you are not, then you have handed your ego a job that the bedroom cannot do without breaking something. Sex cannot build closeness that does not already exist in the relationship. It can deepen what is there. It cannot manufacture what is not.
When her response becomes the measure of your worth, every invitation becomes a referendum. That is the pressure she feels. That is what closes her off.
She cannot desire freely when her desire has a job. When a yes feels obligatory and a no feels like damage, she stops having a real choice. And desire that is not free is not desire at all.
You remove the pressure by removing the responsibility from her answer. Her yes is not your validation. Her no is not your verdict.
The First Move
Before the next invitation, get honest about what you are actually asking for. Write it down if you need to. Are you asking for connection, or are you asking for proof that she still chooses you?
Those are different requests. Only one of them she can freely give.
Invite her the way you would invite someone to a place you genuinely love, knowing they might not be in the mood and that is allowed. Make the no safe. Not performatively, not as a strategy. Actually mean it.
That shift is not passive. It is the hardest thing you will do in this marriage. It requires you to want without needing the want returned on demand.
You can reach toward her as often as you want. She just needs to know she is free to turn toward something else. That freedom is what makes turning toward you worth something.
